Prem Mandir, meaning “Temple of Divine Love,” is one of the most magnificent spiritual and architectural landmarks Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, India. Dedicated primarily to Shri Radha Krishna and also to Shri Sita Ram, the temple was established by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj as a monument expressing the highest ideal of divine love and devotion, or Prem Bhakti. It has become an important destination for devotees and visitors from India and around the world.
History and the Vision Behind Prem Mandir
The story of Prem Mandir begins with Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj’s deep connection with Vrindavan Dham, the sacred land associated with the divine pastimes of Radha and Krishna. According to the temple’s official history, in 1946, when he was 24 years old, Kripalu Ji Maharaj made a vow to build a grand temple in Vrindavan that would preserve and communicate the philosophy of divine love for generations.
Many years later, this vision took concrete form. The foundation stone of Prem Mandir was laid on 14 January 2001, in the presence of thousands of devotees. Construction continued for approximately 12 years, involving around 1,000 skilled artisans and craftsmen. The grand inauguration and Pran Pratishtha ceremonies were held from 15 to 17 February 2012, and the temple was opened to the public on 17 February.
Magnificent Construction and Architecture
Prem Mandir is famous for its extraordinary white-marble architecture. The temple is spread across a large complex of approximately 54–55 acres, while the monument itself covers around 195,000 square feet. Its construction uses pure white Carrara Italian marble, giving the temple its brilliant appearance. The official temple source describes it as a unique monument constructed entirely with this marble.
The temple contains 94 beautifully decorated pillars, along with 84 exterior panels depicting the loving pastimes, or Leelas, of Shri Krishna. Intricate carvings, sculptures and artistic details transform the marble into a visual narration of Krishna’s divine life. Radha Krishna Bhakti and Vrindavan Dham
The spiritual heart of Prem Mandir is Radha Krishna Bhakti. In the philosophy associated with Jagadguru Kripalu Ji Maharaj, divine love is not merely an emotion but the highest spiritual relationship between the devotee and God. The temple therefore presents Prem—pure divine love—as its central message.Vrindavan itself holds a special place in Hindu spirituality. It is traditionally regarded as the sacred land where Shri Radha and Shri Krishna performed their divine pastimes, making it one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the Braj region. Prem Mandir adds a modern monumental expression to this ancient spiritual landscape.Inside and around the temple, visitors encounter beautiful representations of Radha Krishna, Sita Ram, Rasik saints and various Krishna Leelas. The surrounding complex includes life-size depictions of Govardhan Leela, Raas Leela, Jhulan Leela and Kaliya Naag Leela. These artistic presentations allow devotees to experience the stories of Krishna not simply as history or mythology, but as subjects for remembrance, devotion and meditation.
